The Real Reading Comprehension Day

Successful reading comprehension involves orchestrating a range of strategies as well as drawing on prior knowledge of the subject matter within the texts we read. Effective provision in primary schools involves explicit teaching of  these strategies as well as a whole school approach to developing vocabulary and teaching knowledge and understanding of the world. Development of real reading comprehension involves moving beyond questioning. Effective practice includes the use of instructional activities which foster deep engagement in text, allowing pupils to interact with the subject matter and make meaningful connections.  This day will transform your teaching of reading comprehension!

This training will provide you with:

• A deep understanding of the latest research re developing reading comprehension. This will include strategies for explicit teaching of:

– comprehension monitoring

– background knowledge and understanding of the world

– breadth and depth of vocabulary

– grammar and syntax

– fluency

– text structure

– time-limited inference instruction

• Active, practical strategies which will help pupils to engage deeply with text and develop real reading comprehension.
• A clear understanding of what outstanding provision for reading looks like in practice.
• Tried and tested techniques which you will want to use in the classroom the very next day!
