Terrific Teaching Assistants
Improving the Impact of TAs in the Primary Classroom
‘I have been incredibly inspired by today’s course and am very excited about sharing what I learnt with the other TAs at my school.’ Jamie Duckworthy, St Stephens Academy
“Thank you so much for great course. Great interactive training with lots of opportunities to ask questions and talk to others which all made it an enjoyable and informative course. This has more than met my expectations. A wonderfully practical course – both personally and professionally.” Ayrun Nessa, Minet Infant School
Teaching Assistants account for around a quarter (28%) of the overall state-funded school workforce (DfE). Recent research has shown that TAs who are sufficiently trained and deployed effectively within the classroom can have a positive impact on pupil engagement and attainment. For example, improving the nature and quality of TAs’ talk to pupils can support the development of independent learning skills, which are associated with improved learning outcomes (EEF).
During this day we will:
- Examine techniques TAs can use to develop pupils’ independence in reading and writing.
- Explore the use of questioning to move pupils’ thinking forward.
- Consider how the language we use with pupils impacts on pupil progress.
- Explore ways to maximise the effectiveness of group work by using techniques which develop high quality discussion and interaction.
