Supporting Struggling Readers in KS2
This session is aimed at KS2 teachers, English Leaders, SENDCos, TAs/LSAs and all those responsible for supporting struggling readers in KS2.
This training will examine current research evidence re best practice in supporting struggling readers in KS2. We will unpick the essential elements of phonics for decoding as well as the importance of engaging reluctant readers. We will explore the ‘science of reading’, giving delegates a deep understanding of the reading jigsaw and how best to support pupils to make great progress. The session is essential for anyone involved in supporting KS2 children who are struggling with reading.
This training session will:
- Examine what ‘successful’ readers do as well as ‘the science of reading’ and consider implications for supporting struggling readers.
- Consider the importance of assessment in identifying gaps in phonic knowledge/skills and reading fluency and how to use this to target support effectively.
- Examine what constitutes effective intervention and consider best practice in supporting struggling readers.
- Consider the importance of age-appropriate ‘closely matched’ books to develop decoding and fluency.
- Signpost schools to resources and programmes to support teaching and learning.
