Catch-Up Phonics for KS2

This training is aimed at Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 teachers and TAs.

It is imperative that all pupils who have gaps in phonic knowledge/skills are supported to ensure they catch-up with their peers. Without rapid, effective intervention it is common for struggling readers to develop feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem. It is essential that these pupils receive targeted support as a matter of priority so that they master the alphabetic code and go on to become happy and confident readers and writers.

We also know that Ofsted pay particular attention to pupils who are reading below age related expectations to assess how well the school is teaching phonics and supporting all children to become confident, fluent readers. This session will ensure that any intervention is based on sound subject knowledge and pedagogy and has maximum impact on pupil progress. This training will examine:

• Strategies and resources for supporting pupils who have gaps in phonic knowledge and skills.
• Best practice in teaching for pupils who need phonics intervention.
• Assessment and screening for phonics.
